Ambrose 2nd May 2015

My favorite memories of my father include these: sometimes at a very safe and wide-open space without other traffic nearby, Daddy would let me steer the car slowly, while I was sitting on his lap (I was not even ten years old and I could not reach the pedals so he regulated the speed). I remember many times when I was with him in the car as a child, his way of making conversation was to say "Kofi hye ho a?" [Is Kofi there?]. I remember him teaching me maths using a ladybird book. He would bring unwanted scraps of wood home for me to try my hands at carpentry. He taught me microscopy in his office. He taught me photography, and how to conduct experiments and take careful notes. He also bought me a book on aeroplanes, which I loved very much, because I wanted to become a pilot. He taught me to play the piano, played duets with me, and also introduced me to recordings of musical literature outside his own repertoire. As an older late-teen, he would he would ask us to read any of his papers / lectures and make comments and sign off that we had read it. When I passed a difficult exam, he bought me a card with a red rose on it, bought me a nice meal and brought it himself to my room on campus (which he had never visited). Probably the only time he was ever grateful that a child of his passed an exam, because he could take it for granted most of the time. What I cherish most is that he allowed us to make our own career choices though he had been willing to teach us his favorite things. When I wrote my first program on four large sheets of paper, he asked me to explain it to him, and listened patiently through all the details. He accepted that I loved computers, and he bought me my first programmable calculator with which I wrote my first program in BASIC. The rest, as they say, is history. Daddy, thank you for the fond memories. Though we are very sorrowful on your passing, we are grateful for what you were to us and how you were able to serve others during your career. Rest in Peace! --- Kofi (Son)
