My Dear Uncle Yoosi, Privileged is the word that comes to mind when I think back to all the precious moments we shared, walking around Mummy’s garden or identifying plants around No. 5 East Legon, where you lived. As long as I can remember you have always carried a camera and a small ruler in your breast pocket. When I asked why you carried a ruler your response was “so one has an idea of the object’s dimensions later” (a very rare occasion when you did not answer a question with a question). Looking up at my bookshelf I just see rows and rows of plant encyclopedias, books on botany, agriculture, horticulture, career and personal development that I received from you and Aunty Mildred. When you learned of my interest in medicinal plants I received yet another stash of books on the subject. I am grateful to God that I came home when I did. I enjoyed our times together and remember you at my appointments seminar like it was yesterday. The encouragement, the advice and time you spent to help me settle down as a young lecturer. Your frequent trips to my office, our iPad lessons and your contagious excitement when you discovered a new feature or App. Sadness gives way to peace knowing you are in a good place and I dare say taking pictures of all of us. I carry my camera with me just in case something interesting comes up. The Lord gives and the Lord takes, blessed be the name of the Lord. I have one more assignment which I promise to get done asap … Thank you for all the encouragement. I will make you proud. Rest in Peace!! Naa Lam (Dr. Amissah, Department of Horticulture, University of Ghana, Legon).
