The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences mourns with deep sorrow the passing away of Emeritus Professor Ebenezer Laing, an esteemed Fellow of the Academy.

Professor Laing was elected Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1965 on the basis of strong academic and professional credentials that marked him as a great scholar, researcher and scientist. He contributed to knowledge through many outstanding publications, lectures, presentations at seminars, conferences, etc.

Professor Laing presented several papers at the Academy’s symposia and seminars, among them, the following:
State of Research in Applied Genetics in Ghana”, at a symposium in 1969;
Sources of Energy”, at another symposium in 1975;
Resources and Environment”, at the first COSTED/SCOPE workshop in 1975; and

He also delivered the twentieth in the series of the J.B. Danquah Memorial Lectures on the topic “Science and Society in Ghana”, in 1987. Again, in 1995, he delivered the thirty-sixth Anniversary Celebrations Address on the topic “Issues Concerning Conservation and Utilization of Genetic Resources”.

Prof. Laing served twice as Honorary Secretary of the Academy, first, from from 1979 to 1980, and again, from 1987 to 1988. He was the first Regional Secretary for the Committee on Science and Technology for Developing Countries, based in India, which was hosted by the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1994 to 1997. He served as Chairman of the Prizes and Awards Committee, the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), and several other Academy bodies, and contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Academy.

He will always be remembered in the Ghana Academy for his willingness to review papers submitted by candidates proposed to Fellowship or for the Academy’s Awards. His scholarly mind, devotion to duty and amiable personality will be greatly missed by his colleague Fellows of the Academy.

The Academy joins the children and the entire family in mourning Emeritus Professor Ebenezer Laing, and prays that the good Lord, in His infinite mercy, will give the family fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE
