Tribute to a true friend (late Emeritus Professor Ebenezer Laing)

The Ghana Library Association has lost a very important personality in the person of the late Prof. Laing and with heavy heart we bid him farewell. He personified what we call “a true friend of the library”. He was so close to the Association that many of the younger generation thought he was a trained librarian. He was ever present at almost all gatherings of the Association and at times came with his wife, Mildred. Where no other showed up or defended our course, he was among the few always with us and for us. One cannot forget his digital camera he came along with. The most surprising aspect was emailing of the pictures to members immediately after the function. Oh, what a friend we have lost, never in a hurry to leave at the close of functions but stayed on to know more librarians and to share knowledge with his high sense of humour.

He really felt at home with the Association and was willing to make contributions at any point in time. For his contributions, one cannot recount at this moment of grief and pain. He played his role as a true academician and advocate of libraries to the best of his ability that the Association accorded him the highest honour of friendship and service at the 50th Anniversary in 2012.

A few weeks ago, we visited to console him on the death of Mildred, his wife. Little did we know that our friend was saying goodbye to us.

Prof. Laing, GLA will forever remember you for your time, effort, commitment, respect and devotion. You really served us also and we will always miss you. We say in our grief that it is well, it is well, it is well with GLA.

Farewell a true friend of the library profession.

Farewell Emeritus Prof. Ebenezer Laing.
